MALLET FINGER

Mallet fingers occur when you jam your finger resulting in a droop at the joint before your nail. Pain and swelling at this point is accompanied by an inability to extend the finger. This is often caused by a tendon tear but can also cause a fracture of the distal phalanx. Treatment is rarely operative.

Non-operative treatment options:

8 weeks of splinting followed by 4 weeks of night splinting

Operative treatment options:

Pinning of the joint
