RADIAL HEAD FRACTURES

Radial head fractures often occur when people fall directly on their elbow or on an outstretched hand. There is immediate pain, swelling and sometimes deformity over the elbow. Motion is painful especially rotating the wrist.

There is a wide variety of fracture types that occur at the radial head/neck region.

Treatment is determined depending on physical examination and the appearance of the x-ray.

Non-operative treatment options:

Splint immobilization and early therapy

Operative treatment options:

Screw or plate fixation of the radial head

If the radial head is fractured into multiple pieces, a radial head joint replacement is recommended.
