THUMB LIGAMENT REPAIR

Thumb ligament repairs are indicated after MRI shows complete tears of the ulnar collateral ligament of the thumb. Repair is indicated to stabilize the thumb so that arthritis is delayed and to prevent pain.

The procedure involves a 2-3 inch incision on the inside of the thumb. The procedure usually takes about 1 hour and requires general anesthesia. The incision is closed with an absorbable suture.

A splint is left on for 7 days and then you will see occupational therapy to have a custom molded splint made. Rehab will start after the first week.
